SPEAKER_02

Because let's let's be for real. When you go off to college, you ain't going to the doctor like you're supposed to. Not like we do as adults. You know, we try to make an appointment to get to those appointments. But when you're in college, you ain't thinking about all that stuff. So a lot of that stuff adds up, and you don't even know what's going on until you come home. And of course, naturally in that season, you're you're in your 20s. And so your body is, you know, you go through things, you we eat what we want, but it it burns off easy. You know, the pounds, the weight, we all, you know, of course, get heavier. Like I did my freshman. I want to say we have this thing where we say we do it, we're getting like a freshman 20 or 30 or whatever. Whatever it is, freshman 50, and probably about 60, 70 for me. I'll be real. So, yeah, so you gain a lot of weight in college, and then um you find yourself like having all these health issues as you continue to grow older, especially if you continue those same habits as you go into your 30s and 40s.

SPEAKER_00

This is Dr. Moni Dilds, and in this podcast, I'll be sharing wellness from an alternative, natural, and integrated perspective. Welcome to the Monique Diles Podcast. I'm so excited today, y'all. I am so excited today because we have our first celebrity guest, okay? I want to bring him in, bring him in because he holds a special place in my heart. He's the love of my life. I know you know who I'm already talking about. Man of God. He is a father, he is a husband, uh, he's an executive producer, he's a director, he's an actor, he is a writer, he is all the things, a course instructor. I mean, the list goes on, and most of all, he is kind and loving and truly a man of God, right to the core. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, Mr. Ronald Dilts the second.

SPEAKER_02

Wow, wow, wow. I mean, okay, all right. My wife loves me, as you can see. I'm I'm very grateful. I'm blessed, and I always say I'm not just blessed, but I'm highly favored because we all bless just to be alive in this season we're in. So amen to that. So, yes, thank you. Thank you for having me. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

I am so blessed to call this wonderful man, my husband. So I am blown away. He agreed to do this episode. And guys, we've been talking about um a journey of healing this entire season. And one of the reasons why I wanted to bring him on is so that you can hear it from his mouth, his own words, his journey. So let the people know um who you are, first of all, and what you do, and then we'll let we'll jump right into it.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean, you gave me a wonderful introduction, my love. Um, but yes, hello everybody. Thank you all for your wonderful support um through this first season of the Moni Dilts podcast. Um, it was such a blessing to get this rolling. And uh yeah, I was trying to pull my wife for quite some time to get this going. Um, but we finally made time to do it and very grateful. It's been such a blessing. I've been able to reflect over this wonderful journey we've been on together. And um, yeah, I'm grateful. I'm very grateful for my wife. I truly believe God created her just for me to make sure to get my health in order. All right. Um, so the biggest thing about me, so again, I'm Ronald Dills II. I'm a film producer, I'm a college professor at Full State University. Um, so that's what I do. I love staying busy, I love producing stuff to the point that when we had COVID season, I was going crazy. I was like, I gotta produce something. So that's how these podcast shows were birthed during that season because I wanted to produce something. So yes, so we're grateful for the third podcast now uh with my wonderful wife, Monique. Doctor Monique, let me put that doctor on it, Dilt in the house, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, I mean, um, your energy is unmatched. I'm gonna try to I'm gonna try to keep it on his level, right? Because you just hear the energy um just flowing through the microphone, the screen for those that are watching. Um, you're absolutely amazing. So let's talk about your journey and just everything that you've been through. So let's go back to the very beginning, right? So um the journey that you've been on, you've been on a healing journey from high blood pressure to now being healed from high blood pressure. Um, for those that maybe are just tuning into this episode and you haven't listened to the first few episodes, and then also um um high blood sugar to getting better, I would say, on that journey, being healed, and then now, you know, maintaining um that journey. So we want to talk about it all. We want to dive right in. So let us know your prior experience, the beginning of what you can remember of just being diagnosed with high blood pressure. When was that for you?

SPEAKER_02

To be honest, it's been so long that I don't even recall. Um, as we all know, that go off to college. You know, we leave our parents home and we go off to college. Um, my college was University of Florida, uh, where I met my lovely, beautiful wife, even though she wasn't studying then. Yes, I did put that in there.

SPEAKER_00

Um my goodness, child. He wasn't even looking at me, baby. Okay. So it was a two-way street, all right? It wasn't just one way thing.

SPEAKER_02

We're getting our shows mixed up right now, right? That y'all gotta tune in to God Family Business Podcast. There goes the plug, all right? God Family Business Podcast for that story. But yes, so we were um, of course, at the University of Florida, you know, you're you're off, you're away from um your parents, you're kind of learning how to be free, right? Learn how to be free, take care of yourself, cook for yourself. And as you all know, you know, we kind of, you know, just get free, you know. We eat out a lot, we um do different things, you know, we're studying hard, you know, putting that in there. But um, we're also probably not necessarily taking care of ourselves the best, you know what I'm saying? Uh, a lot of partying and different things. And so all of that can add up over time, um, especially someone like me who used to love partying. I used to love, you know, of course I still love eating, but um, but yeah, all of that adds up over time. So naturally, after um graduating from college, you come back home looking at other colleges, um, possibly for continuing education or grad school. And so naturally that the partying and the eating, all of that continued, even though I'm back home. Um, not as bad, because you know, you're back home, you know, with mom and this and dad in this case, you know, um, but it's still you have those habits that kind of have built over time. Um, to the point I was someone that liked to go out and enjoy out the long week, you know, the weekend come. I'm I just like to be free and enjoy myself. So so over time, you know, all of the eating out, all of the um drinking, I'm just be real, um, that stuff adds up over time to the point that you eventually start affecting your health. So I assume when I came back from college, um, you know, from the University of Florida, I came back home and kind of making my way back home and figuring out my next smooth. That was probably around the time that I real um, you know, I probably was diagnosed with high blood pressure in that season. Let's let's be for real. When you go off to college, you ain't going to the doctor like you're supposed to, not like we do as adults. You know, we try to make an appointment to get to those appointments. But when you're in college, you ain't thinking about all that stuff. So a lot of that stuff adds up, and you don't even know what's going on until you come home. And of course, naturally in that season, you're you're in your 20s. And so your body is, you know, you go through things, you we eat what we want, but it it burns burns off easy. You know, the pounds, the weight, we all, you know, of course, get heavier. Like I did my freshman. I want to say we have this thing where we say we doing, we're getting like a freshman 20 or 30 or whatever. 15, whatever it is, freshman 50, and probably about 60, 70 for me. I'll be real. So, yeah, so you gain a lot of weight in college, and then um you find yourself like having all these health issues as you continue to grow older, especially if you continue those same habits as you go into your 30s and 40s. So, yeah, so so probably I would say after college. So, probably in my it could easily probably go on into my 30s or late 20s was probably when I um, you know, received that news, you know what I'm saying? So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so wow. So late 20s, um, high blood pressure. Um, what did that even look like for you? Um, did you have high readings? Um, were you feeling um um any type of symptoms? Or like what did that even look like for you? Or did you not even feel anything at all? And this was just something that was news to you when you went to the doctor.

SPEAKER_02

And it it's funny just to hear you saying that, my love, because honestly, I don't even remember that appointment. That's how long I had been on high blood pressure medication. And it's crazy how the system is because they make it like the norm, like this is normal life, you know, being on medication, you know, they try to make it like that because you you be taking these medications for you find out we turn back, and it's been 10 plus years, and you still are struggling with that high blood pressure for these medications that you take daily. So to be real, I don't even remember when it first started. I just have an estimate that it had to be late 20s, early 30s, possibly, um, which took me 10 plus years, you know, to where we are um um now, you know what I'm saying? So I honestly could easily be early 30s, you know, um, late 20s, early 30s when I really found that news out. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, the reason why I asked that is because maybe somebody else um is on a high blood pressure journey and they may not know um what they are feeling or what symptoms. Maybe I have similar symptoms. So I wanted to know like what did that look like for you? Um, do you even remember the medications you were on? Did you have any type of um swelling or any type of something that may have triggered you to say, okay, enough is enough. What was that for you?

SPEAKER_02

Um, to be honest, back then um I didn't know anything about medications. It's just whatever the doctor tells you, you just you you believe it. You know, you're like, okay, we gotta take these medications. So that's just pretty much how our minds are, you know, just a normal human being. You know, a lot of times we don't have any clue of what the doctor is giving us to take. So that's why I'm grateful for my wife who has that background. So now I know exactly what I'm taking, what is it used for, what I shouldn't be on long periods of time. So, but for the normal, normal person, we don't know. So it's really great to do your own research. Um, I wasn't thinking in that way back then. Now I'm a little more health conscious, so I'm really careful what I'm putting in my body. Um, thanks to my wife, thanks to God first, though. All right, for sending her. But um, but yeah, very conscious about what I'm putting in my body. So even when it comes to medications, I'm I'm asking my wife or I'm doing my research, you know, myself. Um, and so back then, yeah, I didn't know what medications. I'm just listening to the doctor. Um, now, some of the things that could possibly, now I don't remember as far back then when I first started, but now in my 30s and 40s, I did notice when I wasn't taking my blood pressure medications, and maybe I did something crazy, I started getting these crazy headaches. And those headaches are like they're about to knock you down. Like you don't want to be bothered, you want to just go lay down. That is a major, a major uh um symptom um for something like that, I would say, is the headaches. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So okay, so you noticed um headaches. Um, was there anything that um may have happened that kind of gave you a scare? Let's talk about that.

SPEAKER_02

So, yes, I know where you're going with this. So, yeah, there was a time where we ran out of my medication. This is, of course, when I was married to my beautiful wife here, my queen. Um, we had ran out of um a medication and we were just, you know, we felt like we were in good shape. You know, we thought we were eating good then, right? Um, and so we decided to in this season, it was like right before New Year's, and we're like, hey, we're gonna, you know, as everybody does, we start that new health journey in January. So we're like, hey, let's take a uh uh do something nice that we want to enjoy. So let's get some pizza, let's enjoy some pizza. Um, and so then I was on the meat tip. So I ordered my favorite, which was pepperoni pizza, y'all. And so ordered pepperoni pizza. My wife was just on cheese, so usually I'll have to order two different separate pizzas or get that cut in half. Um so I think for this particular one, I ordered the big pizza. All right, um, it was a really big pizza. Um, and I ordered pepperoni, and I was just, I thought I was in in pizza, pepperoni heaven, y'all. And so um had that pizza. I want to say I ate maybe two, three slices, usually, sometimes four. Um, usually it's uh depending on those slices. And so ate it um that night and just really enjoyed myself. I want to say the next morning, I probably had woke up with a headache, and um, and then that's how I realized, okay, something is weird, but didn't think it was my blood pressure. I was just like, okay, I'm hungry, let's go get some more pizza. So kept eating, eat, ate some more pizza. Um naturally, oh, actually, I want to say that moment I was wondering if I should eat the pizza. So maybe I didn't eat the pizza. Yeah, I think I ended up, I was really sad because I think I ended up throwing that pizza out because of the headache. Uh, but we did check my high blood pressure, and I think that's what made me kind of realize yeah, it's probably the pepperoni um that spiked it up, you know. Um, and so we ended up, of course, getting rid of that pizza. But that was crazy that eating the pepperoni pizza shot my blood pressure up to the point that my wife was like, usually from my training, usually I'm told to tell you to go to the emergency room. And I'm just like, I don't want to go to the emergency room. What can we do naturally? I don't feel like going to the emergency room for this. And so I remember her rushing off to the store, um, getting some garlic, coming back home, boiling that garlic. Um, and we just did a garlic tea, I think, for like two to two days straight. And I didn't even want to eat anything. That's how bad it was. I was just like, I'm just ready for this to be better. Um, and so that's what ended up happening. Of course, we had to get me back on my medication um because of that. And I want to say I probably was off maybe, maybe a week, maybe. Um, maybe like, yeah, a little over like maybe a week, maybe a week or two. Um, so we ended up getting me back on, but then that's when we started making those changes um to kind of get my health in order because little did we know, a few weeks later into the new year, I was going to be diagnosed with diabetes now, you know, and a constant battle with that over the years, too. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, wow, wow. So, I mean, what a great transition, right? Um you're natural. But uh to provide some, you know, some context for you know those that are watching or those that are listening, you um were on a calcium channel blocker and also a diuretic, which is a water pill that is supposed to um remove excess fluid. Um, however, some of the things that I noticed you still had um you still had some swelling in your feet. And I know primarily that was because of you sitting down, um, because you know, you know, working from home, that cook that kind of thing. So it was always important to kind of get up and move around. But you definitely had some swelling and that that water pill did not take care of at all. Um of course, when we did try the garlic, um, I did want to say that the garlic helped you out quite a bit, um, especially because you didn't have your medication at the time. But what we noticed was medication gone, right? And you put something in your body, of course, that could possibly raise your blood pressure. What happened? It went through the roof, and that was what was experienced. And um, I think for you, that was definitely um a scare for sure, and a turning point um where you're like, okay, enough is enough, right? Um, do you agree?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, totally agree, totally agree. Yeah, I was I was really in the dark place, and I would say, you know, dark place mentally, because you, you know, when you're fighting something for quite some time, um, and you're just you're just trying to be the best husband, trying to be the best at your career, trying to reach your own career goals and stuff like that. You don't want to be dealing with health issues, you know what I'm saying? And so that was very depressing to just keep seeing these numbers elevate just because I'm off of this medication. You know what I'm saying? A medication that at this point I had been on for 10 plus years. Um, and so in this season, I felt like I was doing well and we were, you know, we were eating better and trying, you know, healthier options. And so it was good for quite some time. But then of course, when I had this one item um that's probably full of a lot of sodium, it just shot right up to the point of I have to go to the emergency room. You know what I mean? So that's very sad, you know, the to see like a medication having one that effect where it's supposedly make me feel better enough or kind of put a band-aid over me eating these type of foods in the first place, but having foods that also are in a sense, just be real, is out to kill the kill us, you know what I'm saying? So um, so yeah, that was a very that was a turning point. And I want to say, after having that pizza, I probably had pepperoni pizza one other time, you know. Um, and I think I was at my cousin's wedding weekend. Um, and I said, hey, I'm gonna just enjoy some pizza. You know, I hadn't had it in a little while, so I enjoyed it for that that night. But then after that, I was like, I think I'm gonna make this my last pepperoni pizza, and I'm gonna try to, you know, weed myself off of pork because you know that's the crazy part. The sweetest meat in the world, right? It's the one that's killing us. Ain't that something? All right.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, right? So great segue into you know what was coming up next, because you've been through um a lot, and we've spoken about your journey on um this seed this season, this podcast, and it's been just um incredible to see um what you've been through and what you've overcome. But um diabetes type two. So how did we get there? Um, I want you to share that with the people.

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow. So with the diabetes, um it is crazy because we often hear like if diabetes run in your family, um, you know, you pretty much are set up, you know, to get diabetes. You know what I'm saying? So that was something that ran in my family. Um, and so of course, naturally, when that came up, it that was the first thing that I thought about. Well, it runs in the family, unfortunately, right? That's how they they gear our mind. But I'm here to tell you that just because it runs in the family doesn't mean it has to be you, okay? Um, we've learned over the years, and um we've learned that, hey, because this could be this is my wife talking through me, y'all, but we've learned that it's not um necessarily passed down, um, you know, that that um that diagnosis is not passed down. It's more so the traditions are passed down, you know what I mean? Um, and I had a moment, because of course I love, you know, grilling. That's how I grew up. My dad and I, we spent time over the grill. He taught me a lot, you know, had a lot of great conversations over that grill. And uh, of course, naturally, I wanted to pass the same thing down to my sons, you know what I'm saying? Um, and have those moments. And I remember when my wife had came to me and she was like, I want the kids to be vegan. And I mean, it I almost, man, my if I had hair, it would have fallen out. Uh but but you're talking to someone that was a straight meat eater, y'all. Straight meat eater now. Used to love meat, ate meat every day, sometimes two, three times a day. That's that was me. I love grilling. And I was happy when I had different varieties of meats that I can enjoy at home. Um, naturally, I wanted to make sure, you know, eventually we get to that point we're like, okay, we got to get off a pork, we got to get off a beef. We we can't eat too much beef, you know what I'm saying, and different things. And so you're constantly growing, you know, and trying to live healthier lives. But still, I was on meat, you know what I mean? Um, and so that was kind of like uh, wait, what? You know, I felt a certain way about that. Yeah, but then um, you know, I'm gonna say it took some time, you know. Of course, God had to work on my heart, of course, with that too. And I was like, okay, my love, if that's something you want to do, mind you, it was just we had our oldest, and our second oldest, I think, was just not too well, not too long born, but they were, you know, um growing, still young kids. You know, our oldest, he had already had meat, you know, he had tried meat um and various things that we would give him. So it was kind of like, whoa, okay, you know what I mean? I was looking forward to sharing certain journeys with him. But um, that really was an eye opener. Um, and then at this point, my wife was already, she had decided to go ahead and start her vegan journey. Um, so she went on and moved forward without meat. So um hear this now. So this was an eye opener, too. We're getting vegan foods, right? Vegan butters, vegan um cheese, and all different types of stuff. And then we get normal stuff. So just imagine how much that adds up, you know, with the bill. So we're getting normal stuff that has butter, milk on my end, because I'm still on that end, but we're getting vegan stuff, you know, for my wife and her end and now the kids. And so, so yeah, so it used to be sometimes like, man, the I'm noticing the butter is is lasting a lot longer, and it's eventually I'm not even using it all because I'm the only one eating it, you know what I'm saying? Especially if you're shopping at like Costco, you know. Um, and so you start seeing like money is being wasted because you're the only one doing that. So naturally that kind of inspired me uh to say, hey, well, maybe I should start trying some of the stuff that my wife is doing. And so, of course, that uh led me to even start trying more, you know, uh when it came to being vegan. So, so yeah, so I know I don't went on off on a tangent, but that's pretty much you know where we were.

SPEAKER_00

So talking about the food now, because that's exactly where we're headed. Um what was your, of course, your relationship with food, and um what was it about food that you did differently um to start your healing journey?

SPEAKER_02

Um, my relationship with food. Uh my wife will probably always say food is my love language because she could talk about food and I get excited, y'all. I be wanting to kiss on her, love on her, you know. Uh yeah, no, that's just me, y'all. I don't know if that's you, but that's me, y'all. All right. I love to eat. I don't care if vegan, vegetarian, or not, I'm eating. I don't care what journey I'm on. Um, so I have a I didn't know I had a love language for that. My mom used to spoil me so much. Um, and then my grandmother's day, and grandmothers make you eat even crazier stuff. Um, but yeah, my mom used to cook so much great stuff for us growing up, cakes and all kinds of stuff that we enjoy. And so that was kind of like my thing. I love when I think of family getting together, I think of us having a tradition, you know, we're having a big Sunday dinner. Right. Um, we're having when we party, we're having, you know, all of this food, you know, beyond, you know, like a feast, you know, say eating like kings and queens. We didn't even know, but we're eating like kings and queens. And so that was my life growing up. So when I think of family, I think of us getting together around the table and enjoying some food and conversation. So I did have a really great love, still have a great love for food. Um, with us, I think when we started this journey, originally it started out with meatless Mondays. All right. So meatless Mondays were something we were doing. And looking back on it now, we weren't even, I mean, we're meatless, but it's still we were doing like beyond meat and stuff like that on for Mondays. And that was a tradition. I mean, not a that was a transition, excuse me. Um, and so it started out with meatless Mondays, then it went to possibly every other day, and then eventually it became like three days in a row. Um, so eventually it was kind of like, okay, let's try for the whole week and and beyond, you know. Um, and so that's how it kind of started out. It started out very slow with uh Meatless Mondays. Eventually that grew out to other things. It was a time where I just felt like I had to have beyond meat. Um, of course, there's some other ones out there that is not on the level that they're on, you know, where they're using better products. Um, and so it was a time that I was like, I have to have beyond meat if I'm not eating regular meat. And so um I've grown out of that. Praise the Lord, right? I've grown out of that where I don't have to have Beyond. Um, it was a time that I went when we first started journeying. I didn't have Beyond for like a year. And then eventually I said, Oh, I want a burger. So let me go get, you know, try it again. And of course, Beyond, thank y'all for making better oils with your food now, for putting better oils in them. Um, and so, but it was a time where um I had to have that, you know what I'm saying? And so um we grew out of that, you know, on our own journey when my wife decided to kind of weave me off a whole lot of things, okay? So I'm I'm sure I had some attitude, still have some attitude with some stuff, you know, that she be trying to do to me, y'all. But it's for my best, okay? I know God blessed me. And she always reminded me that you know God gave gave you to me. It's my job now. She always reminded me about that. Um, I'm like, yeah, whatever. Okay, praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. You know, that's how you beat me. You didn't say to me, so but yeah, so that um getting back to that, but yeah, we started, um, she started giving me where we would do just salad and fruit. And man, I felt like I was a rabbit, y'all. I was mad at the dinner table that night. I remember it was this one day she tried that. I'm like, what is this? Where's where's everything else? She's like, this is what we're gonna try, darling. She tried to put it up nice. This is what we're gonna try, darling. Okay, gonna see if you like it. And I'm like, man, I was mad, y'all. I'm like, what the heck? How am I supposed to get used to eating this? You know what I'm saying? Um, so I was mad at that. We tried it again. Over time, it got better and better. But eventually we decided after the diagnose just kind of was there for diabetes, high blood pressure, we're still fighting to get off. We decided to just say, hey, we're gonna take a raw journey. Um, we've seen some really amazing, amazing content from some really great creators that have tried this, and and it was just something that we were like, yo, let's try it. You know what I'm saying? Of course, I'm saying it now like it was nothing, but yeah, it was something. So, so yeah, we stepped out on faith and we went on a raw fruit and vegetable diet, and we did it. I want to say it started between three to six months, right? We did about half of the year for that first run for raw fruits and vegetables. So, what a journey and what a change in my life, too.

SPEAKER_00

Wow. Like you literally, you just dropped a whole ton on us, okay? Um just like blown away by everything you just shared. But there were also some other diagnoses um, along with high blood pressure and um type 2 diabetes. There was also high cholesterol, there's also elevated liver enzymes. Um, so there were some other things that he was going through as well. So we literally just had to straighten out the entire um metabolic panel, right? So I'm so glad that you spoke about that about starting a raw journey where we wanted to instead of doing the processed foods like the Beyond Meat and and other um meat alternatives, um, actually look at whole foods plant-based for what it is, eating whole foods and really going back to the source, back to earth, right? What God has given us. And this is what we've spoken about on this podcast. So I'm so excited for you sharing your journey. What um did you eat? What were the highlights of the journey? We know you did a raw vegan journey, you did um, well, I should say whole foods plant-based journey, right? You did fresh fruits, you did fresh vegetables, you did um periodic fasting, um, incorporated tons of water. Um, what were some of the highlights of that that you know for a fact benefit benefited you and that helped you um on this healing journey?

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow. So I remember when we first started this journey, I was I was a little scared, y'all. I'll be honest. I'm like, how are we gonna do this? You know what I'm saying? But in the back of my mind, I was just really tired. I was tired of being unhealthy. I was tired of being overweight. I was tired of having high blood pressure, I was tired of having sugar diabetes, y'all. And so that was pretty much my motivation. It was a spiritual journey, um, definitely a healing journey mentally, physically, and spiritually. Um, in this season, I don't think we we were a little active with walking when we could, but um, just that transition alone, you know, it was kind of different. Like, man, I want to work out, but I feel like I need more calories, you know. That's how our mind is geared, you know. Um, and so when we first started out, it was just like we just kind of jumped in the middle of the ocean and just just just swim to start just jumping there, just through, just jumped in head first. Um, we just went strictly fruits and vegetables, and I'm one I can't stand raw vegetables back then, especially. I was like, I don't know if I can do avocado and all these different, and I know avocado is not a vegetable, it's a fruit, right? You know, that was close to the vegetables possible. But I'm just like, I don't know if I can do raw vegetables, and I wasn't really an avocado fan during that season of my life. Um, so I more so geared my focus over to fruits. And I was telling my wife, like, look, I think I just want to focus on the fruits because the vegetables is just a little different without any dressing, salad, without, you know, it was it was really different. Um, in this season, yeah, my wife grew in this vegan journey where she prepares her our own dressings and different things. But I'm just like, and it's funny that we had clients, you know, that she was working with, and she has all these books of recipes now and stuff. I have to tell them it may be hard, but imagine not having all these recipes and just having fruits, just plain fruits, y'all. Plain vegetables. Um, so yeah, so that was very difficult. Um, but you know, over the time you learn it's all mental. It's all mental. That was something I learned. Um, you tap into God on a whole different level. When you are not putting junk in your body, um, you know, God is just it's just amazing what God is doing through you in those moments. And your body is healing, healing. You can you pray different, right? And you talk to God differently because you're feeling different. Um, and of course, it's hard. It is so hard, but eventually over time, it gets easier and easier. You're basically reprogramming your body to eat these things. And I found that over my journey is certain things that I love. Like I love having coffee in the morning. Um, I love having now I love having my granola every morning and my pistachios. Um, before I used to love having an omelet with cheese and some turkey, you know, in the middle. That was my thing every morning. To one morning, I want to say years later, after doing that, I was like, my love, I'm not really feeling the eggs for some reason anymore. It was weird, very weird. And this was right before I became, we started taking that vegan and me vegan vegetarian diet. Um, but we jumped in straight vegan, straight raw, and that changed everything to the point that raw stuff, you know, after doing um fruits and vegetables for so long, nuts taste amazing. They taste like meat to me, you know. Um, and so this was it was really, it was a really major turning point. Um, and doing that six-month journey where we was just straight raw fruits and vegetables, um, really changed my world. To the point that after this, I was like, hey, I'm gonna dabble in meat some more. Um, when I got on this journey with my wife, I want to say probably when we got closer to that six months, I'm like, baby, I think um, I think I'm gonna let meat go. And you just see the way she was feeling. She was like, wait, what?

SPEAKER_00

I couldn't believe it. I was like, what? No.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, yeah, I think I'm gonna let meat go. Because I was gonna do this for three quarters, and that fourth quarter for the holidays, I was gonna enjoy my meat. You know what I mean? I was looking forward, but um, I just felt like in my spirit, like it was time. If it, if I didn't do it any other time, now is the time because I had been off of it, you know, for six months. And now we're growing into the second half of the year. And so it was kind of like, let's try to be vegan, you know, let's try that, let's try this journey out, you know what I mean? Um, and so so yeah, so that was a major turning point for me.

SPEAKER_00

So just so that everybody can understand what happened here, um we did a raw vegan journey to address high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. You did it. Um, what you intentionally wanted to start off with was about uh 90 days, right? And then um you went for a little bit longer, right? For about six, seven months, and over the course of that, within two and a half months, okay, you were able to remove both blood pressure medications that deserves uh a round of applause and congratulations. Um literally, this year will make three years that he has been high blood pressure medication free simply by just adjusting the diet. So food, food plays a major role. So two and a half months, high blood pressure free, and then seven months down the line, your A1C actually went back to normal range. So it took about seven months for the A1C to get back into the hemoglobin A1C, which is a marker for type 2 diabetes, um, to get back into normal range, guys. Like that is absolutely incredible, incredible. So we're talking about a healing journey that took months, all right? A lot of times we think a healing journey is gonna take um hours, weeks maybe, um, or just days, but sometimes they take a little bit longer, you know why? Because the body has to correct itself and it takes time. It does, it really does. So I applaud you for putting, you know, yourself first, right? For really addressing the health concerns and just for wanting to make a change. And the changes that you've made has inspired me and inspired the world. And I really want to know how much of this was spiritual for you and how did this impact, you know, even your spiritual journey. And then we'll get into um, you know, what others can do to do what you've done because this is absolutely incredible, life-changing.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yes. So um to answer your question spiritually, it all spiritually, I will say um, because during a journey like this, you can't do it without God. It's very hard, very difficult to do it without a uh, you know, a really great prayer life and talking to our creator because, you know, it's all throughout the word when um God mentions, you know, through through some of the greats that came before us, we we hear the foods, you know, especially by the great Daniel. We hear the foods that make us stronger, that make us live longer and look healthier. And that we're a witness of that right here. You know, when we're fasting, when we're doing these journeys, I mean, we're at the point now we even do a water fast um sometimes. You know, when we start our fast, we'll probably go water fast for a day. One time we did a water fast for three days, y'all. Yeah, don't try that by yourself. Yeah, that's a whole that's a whole different podcast. But um, but God allowed us to make it through. Like I tell you, you tap into that spiritual, yeah, your spiritual connection with God so much more because you got to get through. The way I would say if you have any struggle, whether it's sin, whether it's uh an addiction, um, alcohol, whatever it is, substance abuse, if you can pull yourself away from food, you can pull yourself away from anything. Because food is something that we all enjoy. You know what I'm saying? A lot of times when we're dealing with a lot of stressful things in life, it may not be something else that's crazier. It's food. You know what I'm saying? A lot of times we pull towards food, which that's why we're comfort. Yeah, it's comfort. We we deal with that too. You know what I'm saying? So so if you can pull away from food, I always say that. When I'm ever struggling with anything, I'm like, yo, I can pull away from meat. You know, I should be able to pull away from anything. But it's definitely um, it's definitely a journey. And um, I learned a lot on this journey. I've grown so much on this journey to the point that I love gardening now. That is like a big you would have told me I was gonna be gardening 10 years ago. I would be like, what are you talking about, bro? You know what I'm saying? I absolutely love gardening to the point I'm trying to try to bring some gardening inside the house, you know? Right. Um let's talk about that. So I I absolutely love gardening now and just the whole process of how God allows a small seed to grow into a big tree. Um after the um, we had this crazy, of course, winter down here in Florida, and some of our papaya trees, they had grew so tall. Um, unfortunately, I ended up cutting them down because of the cold front they came through. And um naturally it was too close to the fence, too. So I was just like, ah, let me just move them because they had gotten so I wouldn't expect them to get that big. Um, but they grew so big, and I'm just reminded about that little seed that that came out of the papaya. One little seed grew to that big old tree. Um, so it's the same with us, you know what I'm saying? Like God put that, we were a little seed inside our our amazing mothers, and God allowed that seed to grow, allowed that seed to be birthed into this world, and he constantly watered that seed with food, nutrition, love, and we all grow to these amazing individuals. And so it's the world that we're living in that's constantly trying to kill us with this food, you know. Um, so we have to think about it, have to make better choices. Um, a lot of times out there too, a lot of times it's, you know, people put certain things in foods because that's the business. You know, they have to be able to keep the food on the shelf longer. They have to be able to um, you know, afford what they're putting in their things. So maybe they you they use those cheap oils because that's basically the products that they're putting out in the world. That's what works for them. Um, it's our job to start looking at these labels and seeing what we're putting in our bodies because that's the stuff that's killing us. Different things that are in these foods that we're not looking at. I was one, I never looked at a label until my wife, we got together, and um, and it still took me a while to start looking at labels until I actually took this vegan journey, this raw journey with her. And and then I started caring about a little more what I put in my body to the point when I'm just like, I don't care because I have those moments. I don't care. I'm just gonna eat these chips. Shoot, who cares? I'm gonna eat them, I don't care what they have in them. And then I start feeling sick and crazy, y'all. You know what I mean? Um, so that's how it's like light bulb, what's really going on? You know what I'm saying? Um, I reminded of this. I used to love, of course, fried chicken. Um, that was one of my, man, fried chicken was everything to me growing up. Um, and so one of my comfort things after a long week, I would go to one of my favorite chicken spots and get me some chicken. So this particular chicken spot, you know, I ain't gonna put them out there like that. Um, but this particular chicken spot, they were one of my favorites. I'll go and, you know, get me a box of chicken and you know, do my biscuits and do my fries, you know what I'm saying? And so I that was my Friday meal on payday. You know what I mean? So I have had this point in my life where I was starting to, and it's probably a bit around this time when I started to see, hey, I got high blood pressure, uh high cholesterol, so I need to pull away from the fried food. So I pulled away from this chicken spot um and all fried food in this season. Had a day, I was just thought, I guess I was feeling weak, y'all. So I was like, I want to go get me a box of chicken today. You know, it's payday. I ain't have chicken in a while. I'm gonna treat myself to some chicken. So I went to my favorite spot, one of my favorite spots, got my box of chicken, went home. I mean, I just sat there and ate it like I was in heaven, y'all. The next day, or even that night, I didn't feel too well, y'all. I didn't feel, I felt like I in that moment, I was like, I'm not ever going back to this spot again because of the way that oil made me feel. You know, I felt so sick to my stomach that night. Now, we enjoying it during the process while we're eating it, but afterwards is when you start regretting, you know, you know, what you just have have done. And so, so yeah, so I started to feel really sick to my stomach. And so that was a light bulb went off like, man, I gotta stay away from that spot, you know. Um, so yeah, so you have these moments, you know what I'm saying, and things like that happen. Um, so you just gotta listen, you know, listen to the um the Lord inside your mind and your heart, you know, that God is trying to tell you, you know, the spirit, and they'll lead you and guide you, you know, where you need to be, when especially when it comes to certain things you just gotta start letting go in your life. So uh, so yeah, so that's that's what happened with me on that.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, wow, wow, wow. So completely healed from high blood pressure. I mean, when he goes out to take his um blood pressure, and I can't wait for us to do an updated video. Um, by God's grace, it is within normal range, and we can say glory, hallelujah to God for the victory over high blood pressure. And it's simply just by um changing the diet and eliminating the foods that cause inflammation, um, blood sugar. Um what after seven months the A1C went back to normal. But guess what, guys? When you start adding back in certain foods, right? Guess what? The blood sugar can still go up and down and fluctuate. So it's definitely something that you still have to work on. High blood pressure is the same, you still have to work on it, you still have to take the journey, still have to eat, incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables and exercise and movement and blood circulation and sunlight and um all oxygen, fresh air, all of those things um are have been beneficial on his journey, my husband's journey. And I'm super proud of you for just taking that leap. Cause that's really what it was. It was a leap of faith. So what would you say to somebody that wants to take that leap to um change their life around, you know, to go from where they are now to seeing themselves without high blood pressure medication or without um blood sugar medication and just being able to be free. Like what is something that they should do?

SPEAKER_02

Nice. So the biggest thing you should do, well, first, first, first and foremost, you know, take it to God. Um, pray about it, ask God to lead you, ask God to put the right people in your life. Um, a lot of times with situations like this, we just try to do it by ourselves. And it's really tough to do something like this by yourself unless you're grounded, you know, in your faith. Um, so for me, that made it easy, easy for me was my wife, you know what I'm saying? My wife got put her in my life because if she wasn't here, I'd probably be still doing the same thing, y'all, still taking up the same medications. Um, and so he really put her in my life to help gear me. I was like, God must have some big plans for my life, y'all, um, because of that. You know what I'm saying? Absolutely. Um, because he wants me to be around, you know?

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

But um, but yeah, I think you should start with prayer. Start with making small changes. Like, don't feel like you have to jump in and just go, hey, it's strictly fruits and vegetables, because you won't make it if you do that. It's gonna be really hard to make it, you know what I'm saying? Um, and you don't want to be this discouraged, you know. So start very slowly. Like maybe one day you say, hey, I'm gonna start doing smoothies on Mondays. That's what we're doing now. You know, times we will fast in certain seasons, and then we get off our fast, and then we get back to our normal vegan lifestyle, eating all kinds of things, and then guess what? That weight comes right back on you. Um, you start finding yourself dealing with it still the same type of problems, you know what I'm saying? Um, so it's very important for you to kind of, you know, make certain changes in your life. So, yeah, fasting from food and everything, and just doing smoothies on Mondays. At first, I was kind of like, ooh, dang, that's gonna be tough. But now it's so the norm that I look forward to it now. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I look forward to having that um that cleanse and just doing just drinks, you know. Um, and it's great because guess what? You get the best sleep, you know, when you're fasting from food. You get the best sleep. And even with just smoothies, like you get great sleep when you're just doing water, but even with smoothies, you get great sleep. You know what I'm saying? Um, and so that would be the thing I would say. It's just making those small changes. Um, start with one day, eventually build up, and build up to your, you know, officially probably doing a few days. Um, and then eventually you're starting to cut away different things, you know what I'm saying? Um, for me, it was a big thing to cut meat. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, that was very huge for me because it was something that I know I had a relationship with. Yeah, I had a big relationship with meat and with food, you know. Um, and so it was really hard for me to strip that from my life. But um I'm one to say if I can do it, anybody should be able to do this. Absolutely. Um, and so it's it's it's very important. But again, meat is not something you can just cut overnight, you know what I'm saying? Um, you know, I do say, hey, it would be great if you can take those adjustments and start having days where you don't eat meat, you know what I'm saying? And then just try to build up from there. Um, and so, and and I wouldn't necessarily recommend. I mean, I know with us we did do the alternative meats. Um, a lot of those are full with a lot of sodium.

SPEAKER_00

Sodium, yes.

SPEAKER_02

And um a lot of them are full with a lot of different oils and different things. So just be mindful of that. That is a way that you can try to pull away from meat, is finding a great option that maybe can help you, and then you just build, you know. Everybody has to set their own journey. Um for us, yeah. We jumped in, did raw fruits and vegetables. I don't highly recommend that to everybody. Um, it was very tough to do that. But again, it's it's doable, you know, if you just take it like one one day at a time, one week at a time. You know what I'm saying? It's very doable. So do that. Check out your health, the way you're eating. Um, of course, talk to God. You want to make sure you're moving. We're in our 40s now, and so things are a lot different now than it was in the 30s and the 20s. So we can't just jump up and go. You can't stay up late at night and think you're gonna feel good the next morning. No. And so getting rest, staying active is so important and so crucial to us now. And so we feel both of us feel off when we don't get enough rest. And I'm saying this now because we recording late at night right now. Um, so we don't get enough rest. Sometimes we can be a little off if we're not moving our bodies, moving that blood flow. We can be a little off. And so those are also important elements, just as eating is. Um, you have to make sure you're moving your body, you have to make sure you're getting the proper rest. I I know, and and and my wife said this too, where those numbers can adjust, they can change, they can go back, um, especially when it comes to your A1C. Um, I noticed too, of course, naturally, you have where we're trying to eat the best we can, stand away from a lot of sugary stuff. But when I'm not getting the proper rest or I'm not moving my body, working out, you know, daily, yeah, that A1C, it can go up. It can go up. Those numbers can go up. And so it's very important for you to implement all of that. You know, what you eat, moving your body, and also um getting the proper rest. All right. Now, with that, I'm gonna throw in one extra one. Um, this one is making sure you find a way that you can check your own vitals. Okay. So invest in a machine or, you know, you know, as they have those little um machines that you can check your own blood pressure. Um, you can check your own um blood sugar. Invest in that stuff that you can check it. And I'm saying, I know my wife probably can roll her eyes, but check it on the regular. You know, I try my best to check mine on the regular. She's constantly on me about that. You need to check, you need to check it. Um, but yeah, check it as much as you can. Don't just wait till you go to the doctor for them to tell you what your numbers are. Right. You need to be checking it yourself, okay? Don't wait. Check it yourself so you already know what's going on. Uh, when I go to the doctor and get my blood, I'm not even, I'm not even nervous anymore. And their machines always seem like they're off to me. Because, you know, I know we rushing in there sometimes, especially if you have children, you're just doing a lot. By the time you get there, yeah, your blood pressure is gonna be high. You know what I mean? You don't went through a lot just to get in the door. Um, but as long as you're checking it at home and you know it's steady, you can let your doctor know, hey, it was a lot lower at home, you know what I mean? Um, so it's always great to make sure you're checking your stuff yourself. So that would be my key tips right there. Getting started.

SPEAKER_00

All right. If you see me, um, you're watching, like, Moni, what's going on with your eyes? Um, they're a little dry. Um, and I do wear um lenses. So I think it's probably because of the beautiful lighting that we have in this wonderful um mini studio that my husband decked out. So that's what's going on um with my eyes right now. But thank you so much for sharing those tips because those are gonna be very helpful for somebody that wants to um start a healing journey and they're hearing it from your mouth. All right, you got a chance to hear from my mouth a little bit. Well, a lot, but now you get to hear from my husband himself exactly what he has done and things that have worked for him. Hopefully, a lot of these tips can work for you as well as you start your healing journey. It's definitely um something that you got to go to God about first and pray about, and then God will show you exactly how to take those steps and take it little by little, all right? Just as he said, you don't want to just jump right in, but take steps to get there. Start off maybe with a meatless Monday um or just incorporating more fruits and vegetables. I highly recommend that the plate should be at least 50% or more of fresh, not frozen, fresh fruits and vegetables. All right, more oxygen, more healing. So, congratulations on three years of being fully healed from high blood pressure, um, your blood sugar. I know we're work, right? We're we're there, right? Um, but we have seen the A1C come down and we are doing our best to keep it where it needs to be. Um, exercise, diet, food plays a role. So to close, before we close, I do want you to share what your relationship is now with food and um how food has like your your view of food, right? How it has been impactful from where you were to where you are now.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. So uh my relationship with food now is is it's night and day, um, which is why those moments when we do fast from food, um, whether we're doing a smoothie fast, a water fast, which is still hard. There's not nothing exciting about that. But what is exciting is just that moment that you take away from food and and you realize that I don't have to eat, you know, this early. Um, one thing that I didn't get to mention is I um do I I forgot what the name of this, but it's kind of like that the fasting. I don't break fast until 12 p.m. usually. So in the morning I'll do like my coffee or tea, whatever I'm doing. Um, you know, and of course I drink in my water, I'm working out, but I don't usually start my eat my first meal until 12 p.m. And so that was something that I started doing. Was it like incremented fasting? I forgot the name of intermittent fasting. Yeah, so I started doing that when I heard about that, and um, it just became the norm for me. And I still do it. It's crazy that over the years I still do that. And um naturally that kind of helps my body digest those foods from the previous day. And of course, you know, I break at 12 and then I pretty much eat my last meal between 6:30 and 7 o'clock. Sometimes it can be a little bit between 7 and 8, depending on what my schedule is. But I try to get done before eight o'clock most nights. That's the that's the goal. Um, and so I have this window, and then of course, cutting off that eating time earlier helps out a lot because now you're not going to bed and your body feels like it has to do all this work for you to rest. You know what I'm saying? Um, so you're you'll notice when you do eat late, and it's been times that I had to eat late because I'm in a busy rehearsal season, and maybe I'm just eating some nuts and fruit on the way home. Um, sometimes I'll um when I do do those, I wake up the next morning and my stomach is a little hungry because it's been working all night to just digest that food that I just ate the night before, you know, and it's not in my window. So it's all about programming your body. So if you program your body to say, hey, I'm gonna eat between 12 and 8, you feel off when you eat before um before 12, you know, sometimes you feel off if you eat after eight, you know what I'm saying? Um, because I've reprogrammed my body. Um now on the weekends, you know, I'm with the family. I usually come in and, you know, of course, we we you know, we make breakfast and stuff sometimes over the weekend as a family. So I'll eat a little earlier for that, but throughout the week, I'm always eating around 12 o'clock. Let me now sometimes it can be between 11:30 and 12 o'clock when I'm feeling like, hey, it's time. I'm ready to eat now, you know. Um, but yeah, so that it's it's been a journey um to get here, but um the way I look at food is totally different. Like I don't feel like I have to have food. I do love having my hot drinks, especially my coffee. Um, as long as I can have that, I'm usually good. Um, and then of course when we're doing a water fast, I even fast from that, you know, give myself a break from that as well. And sometimes on the smoothie fast, sometimes I'll do that as well. So um, so yeah, I look at food totally different. Food is just something that I was just like, hey, it's time to eat. My body wants something, but it's not something I gotta have all the time. Um, it used to be a time where, of course, I was cooking breakfast. Now I prefer just having granola. Granola with some peanut butter and some bananas on it and raisins. I'm good. That's like my breakfast of choice. Um, as well as with lunch, sometimes I feel like I had to have a sandwich and some chips. Now I do some pistachios and fruit, and that's like if I as long as I have that, I'm good. You know what I'm saying? Um, and so I look at food totally different now because of the journey that we've been in. And that's one thing I will encourage. If you really want to start looking at food differently, do a fast. Whether it's uh, I'm just gonna, hey, I'm just gonna do all fruits and vegetables, cut everything else out, or I'm gonna do all smoothies, or I'm gonna do a water fast. Whatever fast you do, it will allow you to look at food differently. So when you start adding stuff in, and hopefully you do it slowly so you don't hurt yourself, but you start adding stuff back in, you'll start appreciating that stuff a lot more. So when we do a smoothie fast, I'm looking forward to my granola the next day and my pistachios and my fruit um because I just took a fast from it, you know. Um, and then vice versa. When you start adding in cooked meals, you're gonna just love everything. Cooked vegetables, everything is gonna taste so good. But yeah, so you'll find that if you do a fast, you will you too can look at food totally differently.

SPEAKER_00

Awesome. So just as you said, um, with a fast, um, you'll find that your palate is gonna change, right? Your tastes for things are going to change, and you're gonna actually be able to taste real food when you're constantly coating your tongue with um salt and sugar and oils, you're not really able to taste what um the food is, right? You're not really able to taste the avocado or taste the tomato or taste the pepper or taste um what the ingredients are in the food because your palate is just coated all the time with salt and oil and sugar. All right. Those are the main things that we're addicted to. So as um my husband said, when you fast, it changes your entire palate. So when you actually start putting food back in again, you're like, whoa, this is amazing, right? I didn't like that tomato before, but now I love it, right? I didn't like that avocado before, but now I love it, right? Oh, those peppers, I actually can taste them now, right? So it gives you like a whole different appreciation for food. Food is medicine, and I will add as well that cholesterol levels were back to normal on this journey, and liver enzymes were also where they needed to be. This has been an incredible journey of healing. I'm so, so blessed uh to be able to chat with you. Um and any last words for the people?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yes. Um, I believe in you. I know you can make those necessary health changes that need to be made in your own life. Um, I'm one that's have done it. I'm a walking testimony. I'm still walking that testimony because I'm still making sure I'm fixing some things that need to be fixed. And so, but with God, guess what? With God, all things are possible.
