And the problem with potassium bromate is that it's a carcinogen. Okay, carcinogens are cancer-causing chemicals. Cancer-causing chemicals in our bread that we are feeding our kids. Okay, so we have to pay attention. Pay attention. Reading the food label is very important. Okay, so you want to look out for potassium bromate. Again, it is added to flour, all right, to help make the product more shelf stable. It can stay in that package for a while. Your honey buns, okay? Your little Debbie cakes, all right. Um, all those little baked goods that you've seen on the shelf for an extended period of time, they have this in there. So instead of um buying an item that has um bromate, you may want to um look for an unbromated flour, okay? Or um you can bake things yourself. This is Dr. Moni Dilds, and in this podcast, I'll be sharing wellness from an alternative, natural, and integrated perspective. With the Doctorate in Pharmacy, it has always been my passion to showcase food as the real medicine and the real way to heal our bodies. We can truly heal one meal at a time by utilizing the food that God has given us. Let's heal together. Welcome to the Monique Dills Podcast. Hello, hello, hello, everybody. Welcome back to the Monique Dills Podcast. We have been recording and just sharing all this pertinent and wonderful health information. And tonight or this episode will be no different. All right, we're gonna talk about some hidden dangers, all right, that's in our food. Hidden dangers in our food, chemicals, chemicals that we should avoid. And I have 12 of them, okay. 12, the top 12 food chemicals that we should be avoiding. You're gonna see me looking a lot here at the screen because some of them I can't really pronounce that well, okay? And if you see something in your food that you can't pronounce when you're looking at it, you don't recognize it. Why is it there, right? That's the question that I have. So we're gonna dive right in. My name is Dr. Moni Dills, I'm a registered pharmacist, and I love sharing health information that God puts on my heart with you. We have seen tremendous amount of healing on this side. We have healed from high blood pressure, we have we have healed from high blood sugar, we have healed from high cholesterol. All right, we have been on a health journey so we can't keep this information to ourselves. God has called us to share it, and that is what I am doing. So let's dive right in and we ask you God to speak through me, Lord. May it not be my words, but yours in Jesus' name. Amen. The first one I want to talk about is very common, okay? It is called potassium bromate. All right, Monique, what is potassium bromate? Okay, it's a chemical that is commonly used in our baked goods, all right. So, our bread, okay, this is how they kind of strip away some of that nutrition from the wheat so that it can stay shelf stable. All right, you ever wonder why some bread, you literally see um them on the shelf for months. I'm talking about months on end, all right. When you bake fresh bread, your bread is not going to last more than a couple of weeks, all right? You probably would have eaten it all by then, okay? Otherwise, you would have to put it in the refrigerator or in the fridge, okay? All right, because it will start to go rancid. Now, to make something shelf stable, they have to strip the flour, some of that nutrition, okay, of its um nutrients, right? That flour of its nutrients, okay. I may have said that twice, but this is what is happening in order to get the item on the shelf, okay, and to make it shelf stable. So you can find it in packaged baked goods, your muffins, okay, your bagels, even um, and just regular bread, sliced bread that you see, um, brands that you love, okay. Um, wonder bread, nature's own, all the stuff that we grew up on. These are bromated um flour, okay. Bromated breads, potassium bromate. If you look at the label, it's likely there, okay. And the problem with potassium bromate is that it's a carcinogen. Okay, carcinogens are cancer-causing chemicals, cancer-causing chemicals in our bread that we are feeding our kids, okay? So we have to pay attention. Pay attention. Reading the food label is very important, okay? So you want to look out for potassium bromate. Again, it is added to flour, all right, to help make the product more shelf stable. It can stay in that package for a while. Your honey buns, okay, your little Debbie cakes, all right. Um, all those little baked goods that you've seen on the shelf for an extended period of time, they have this in there. So instead of um buying an item that has um bromate, you may want to um look for an unbromated flour, okay. Or um you can bake things yourself, right? When you're doing something from scratch at home, you're not putting chemicals in it, right? But most of us do not have time to bake bread ourselves. So you want to read the labels. There are many brands out there that are not um putting potassium bromate in their bread, okay. One that I could think of top um is Dave's bread. Um, I haven't seen potassium bromate in there. Um, you do want to look at the ingredients though, because sometimes they can sneak in oils that don't belong. Um, but you definitely want to check out breads that do not have potassium bromate. Okay. Um, another one, there's a bread at Aldi. It's a uh seeded and grain bread. Amazing, okay? No bromate, no oils. It's phenomenal. Whole Foods has a whole line of breads, multi-seed grain bread that's really good as well. No bromate. You just have to look at the label, okay? Look at the label before purchasing. The next, the next chemical is propyroparabin. Okay, now where can I find propylparabin, Monique? Where can you find this? You can find this in your tortillas. You ever wonder why the tortillas can stay on the shelf for a long period of time? Well, this is why, okay. This is a preservative that's used in pastries and tortillas, and it helps just to keep them on the shelf. Again, everything that I'm gonna list for you today is to help business, all right? It's not for your health at all, all right. When companies are producing a product, they're also looking at how they can get the bang for their buck as well, okay? So, how can we extend the life of this product and have it out there long enough so that we can get a buy, right? It has nothing to do with your health. Now, there are a lot of brands that are stepping it up and they're not putting these types of chemicals in their food. And I'm so grateful for that, okay? But we as consumers, we have to read the food labels, and propylparaben is one of them. It's in many pastries, all right? Your Danishes, your donuts, that kind of things, things that we shouldn't be eating, anyways, right? Um, but your tortillas, you definitely want to look for those companies that are doing it right. Um, I do like uh CSA brand, they do have a great uh tortilla brand. Um Trader Joe's has a few out there, Aldi. You have to look at the label, okay? Whole Fools, they have their own brand of almond flour tortillas, all right. Maybe you have to get a tortilla that's not made out of wheat. Okay, a lot of times when it comes to traditional wheat, okay, many companies, many are loading it up with preservatives, loading it up with many chemicals, stripping it of this nutrients just to make it shelf stable. So many times you gotta look for other um options like almond flour, okay, something else, or just a hundred percent um non-GMO corn, even okay. That's just the ingredients, they have those out there, or you can make it yourself at home, which we've done, and we enjoy doing that as well. The problem with propyl paraben is that it causes developmental and even reproductive harm. So when you're eating a tortilla or a pastry, you don't want to have to think about it messing up your child's development, okay, or even your um capability of reproducing. Okay, we don't want to think about that, okay. We want to avoid products with this preservative. All right, let's move into the next one, okay? BHA. Now, I'm probably gonna mispronounce this, okay? This is butylated hydroxy anisole, all right. BHA. BHA, and many times you will actually see it listed as BHA on the label, okay? Now, this is a preservative used to cure many meats. So if you go into the deli section and it's packaged up, many times you will see BHA there, okay? Um, this is a human carcinogen, so you want to avoid products with this preservative, all right? So um, I'm also gonna talk about another one that you'll see as well. But you want when it comes to curating um meat packaging and just keeping its shelf stable, again, um I was talking to my husband about this the other day. The animals that you are eating were unfortunately, right, um, killed or butchered, I should say, months ago. Okay, months ago. So if you think about that for a second, how do we get it to be um shelf stable so that it could last for a little bit longer on the shelf so that it can be um, you know, appealing to the consumer, um, you know, even tasty to the consumer, what can we do? All right, so this is one of the things that are being used, okay, when it comes to preserving meat and other foods. The reason why you want to avoid this is because um it is a human carcinogen. There are companies that I believe are using um celery juice, I believe Applegate. Um, when we used to consume meat was one of the um brands that was using like celery to cure the meat, celery juice, right? So heading in a better direction versus using something harsh as BHA. Okay, moving on to BHT, butylated hydroxy toluene, okay. BHT, you're gonna see enlicit as BHT. Now, this is a preservative in many cereals, many cereals, okay. So the traditional box cereal is not the cereal, um, it's not the same, okay. I don't even want to say it's not the cereal that we grew up on because I feel like the cereal we grew up on, we were we were the test dummies, okay? Um, just to test out artificial flavors, natural flavors, okay. Um, dyes, yellow five, uh, red 40, all of these dyes in our food, right? Um, we got the fruit loops, we got um so many things um that have just dyes, right? That have color, right? Appealing again to kids, right? BHT is one of those preservatives that keeps cereal fresh, all right? It's a chemical cousin of BHA. So, what I just spoke about, BHT is similar. So, what do you think it does as well? This can also cause cancer, right? It's a hidden um carcinogen right in our cereal, right in the cereals that we're giving kids. How do you think that we get to keep cereal on the shelf packaged fresh for a year? Like you buy that thing and you look at the expiration date, right? And it's literally like a year from now. How? How? Tell me, tell me, how can the cereal last that long if we're not putting chemicals in there? Now, there are some cereal brands that are getting it right, all right. Cascadian Farms, I believe, is a brand that's there they're bringing back the old school cereal. I believe the other day I saw like a cookie cereal, it reminded me of like Cookie Chris from back in the day. I looked at the ingredients and they were pretty good. Okay, they have um honey nut Cheerios done right, they have just plain Cheerios done right, um, they have gluten-free. So, I mean, look for brands that when you are trying to purchase something, especially for the kids, that do not have chemicals in there, they have ingredients that you can read and understand, and that's it. All right. Once you start seeing uh a dissertation, okay, a whole side bar of ingredients, then you already know that that's not the package for you. These are not the types of ingredients that I need to put in my body, all right. That's just keeping it plain and simple. If you're not understanding anything else that I'm saying, get it with simple ingredients, all right. Less is actually more, okay. So moving on to um titanium dioxide. All right, this particular ingredient, all right, is an additive, okay, that usually bleaches, right? It gives you that white color. So it is an additive mainly in candy. Um, the reason why it's an issue is because they use it a lot in paint, okay, paper, plastics, anything that can um that you think of as white, right? Likely um it got that color right from titanium dioxide. Okay, but guess what? We're sneaking it in food, we're sneaking it in tablets. I can tell you right now, some as a pharmacist, some of them tablets, okay. That color, that white color is from titanium dioxide, okay? And it's in cosmetics, we're using it in food, um, and it's set in part like a whiteness and an opacity, and even give some products UV protection, especially like the cosmetic products, it can give a UV sort of protection. The reason why this can be an issue, especially if it is consumed in large amounts, is because it can damage potentially damage DNA. Okay, and of course, when you potentially damage DNA, what happens? Right, a cascade of things can happen, okay, that can lead to, of course, um, inflammation, um, and what cancer. Okay, so you definitely want to stay away from things that have titanium dioxide. You will actually see this in the ingredients. Usually, it's one of the ingredients towards the end, so you definitely want to look out for that, okay? Artificial dyes, that's another one that is coming up here, and guys, artificial dyes are literally in everything, okay. I believe that you can name about five things, at least three things, where you think there's an artificial dye, okay? From soda, okay, to candy to anything to cereal to anything that may impart a color that can be attractive to children or even to you, right? If you see something on the shelf that has um vibrant colors and you're looking like, yo, what is that, right? You see a vibrant red, you see a vibrant blue, green. How do you think they're getting a lot of these colors? Okay, artificial dyes and artificial synthetic food dyes can be found in so many different things. And the problem with it is that it affects the development and even the behavior in children. Okay, there have been studies that shown that there are many, many, many behavioral difficulties in children, especially when they're consuming so many artificial dyes. The concerning ones are red three, red 40, yellow five. We've got blue one, green three. Um, some of these have already been banned, which I can appreciate, all right, but there's still a long way to go. Okay. Um, what I love is that there are many companies that are stepping it up, okay, and they are using different things to color food, all right? I can appreciate that. So instead of yellow, we're using turmeric, okay, to color foods yellow, or I mean, excuse me, instead of yellow five, we're using turmeric, right? We're using um turmeric to get that orange color a little bit more and a little bit yet less to get yellow, okay? We're using spirulina to get green. I've seen that, okay. I think it's so amazing. We're using beetroot powder, right? To get our red colors. I'm like, okay. So you really have to look at the label to see what these companies are doing. And if you're if you're using any of the old school products, I'm gonna keep it real. Okay, you're gonna see a lot of artificial flavors and synthetic food dyes. And these dyes are our problems, especially if you're giving your children candy every day. Um, you're giving them some chips even have dye. I think um my husband was looking at chips the other day. Um, and you when you look, look, look at the ingredients, you see some yellow five, and there's like, why? Why do we have some yellow dye on some sort of corn chips, right? Why, right? To make it more appealing, okay? That's why, but it's completely not necessary at all, right? So you definitely want to look at this before giving it to your children so that they're not consuming too much of this, so that it that we're giving them things that actually are helping them grow and helping them develop well and not giving them a hard time, okay, or causing them to have a hard time. Okay, right? Because childhood is rough, okay? It's rough as it is, right? So we don't want to give them anything that's gonna hold them back, okay, and that's gonna mess with their development and their behavior, okay? We want them to have a great trajectory moving forward in life, and I'm telling you right now, you start stripping away these food dyes, all that artificial food, all that processed food, you're gonna start to see them um coming up for air a little bit and behaving so much better, and they're gonna improve so much with their growth and development. All right, next up we have espartima. Okay, Espartamay is an artificial sweetener. So many of you already know of this. Um, it's in many sodas, especially in the diet sodas, maybe a diet coke or diet Dr. Pepper or whatever it is out there because your girl hasn't had a soda in probably since middle school. It's been a long time for me. But aspartame, you will see in soft drinks, okay? And it's just a cheaper way to sweeten your food. But the problem with this is that it affects hormones, okay? So it affects the hormones that regulate metabolism. So here you are, you're getting something that's a diet, okay? It's a diet coke, right? Or it's a diet type drink, or it's a healthier drink, okay? But it actually affects the hormones that regulate metabolism, meaning what? It can have a negative effect on your weight. So you're really gaining weight anyway, okay? So get rid of the sodas, guys, all right. If you're really serious about your health and your health journey, soda cannot be a part of that journey. All right, not at all. Yes, there are some brands that are doing it better, all right. I think we we tried one the other day. Um, I think it's Olipop, um, Poppy. Um, I may be saying, I'm butchering their names. Um, I apologize. However, there are some brands that are. Really trying to provide a better alternative to those that may have to have a soda. I can appreciate that. I can appreciate that. I really can. However, if you're trying to get off of blood sugar medication, if you're trying to regulate your blood sugar, soda can be on that journey. All right. Now, if you don't have problems with blood sugar, but you really are looking to make a switch, all right, look into those brands that can give you a healthier option and maybe enjoy something like that once a week or so. All right. Um, the issue with this artificial sweetener is that it's been linked to heart disease and an increased risk of cancer. Man, I feel like everything on here is causing cancer. There's so much being thrown at us, guys, that we really have to be intentional about the things that we buy and start reading these food labels. ADA. ADA is the next one, okay? I'm not gonna say this right at all, okay? Azodicarbonamide, all right. ADA is how you'll see it on the label, okay? It is a dough conditioner. What is the dough conditioner? So, do you know how the bread can sit on the shelf for several months? Several months, okay. Not a spot of mold, not even a lick of mold, okay? But guess what? It gets better, it can also be soft, and when you bite into it, it's just nice and soft, and it's chewy, and it is moist, and it is just everything, right? Guess how they get that with ADA, okay? It is a dull conditioner, and it also is a bleaching agent in bread, so stripping away the nutrients again. So, please, when it comes to bread, please look at the ingredients again. If it has a whole sheet list sidebar, I mean the back of the bread is all ingredients. You might want to put it back and opt for something more whole grain, and you can read the labels. I would I would honestly suggest sprouted bread, you'll find that in the freezer because guess what? That's not lasting long on the shelf because it's 100% whole grain ingredients. Okay, so look for something that doesn't have all these chemicals that they're that they're lacing and and everything. Guess why? Because ADA has been linked to again an increased risk of cancer, liver, and kidney disease, and it also affects the blood and nervous system. All right, we gotta avoid anything with these types of products, all right. This one is ADA, it is a dough conditioner, it's going to make the bread soft and it's just gonna make it palatable even after sitting on the shelf for a while, which is why they put it in there. But our bodies can only tape us so much, and they are tired, tired of eliminating all these toxins that were flooding in our system day after day after day, year after year after year. So we gotta be intentional about the things that we're putting in our body, period. Next up, propyl galates. This one is actually used in vegetable oil, okay. Um, chewing gum, even so this one you may not see as much, but um, I'm definitely gonna talk about it just a little bit, just because it does cause hormone disruption and it can increase your risk of asthma, um, and even in children hyperactivity. So when you're looking at a chewing gum, you want to make sure this is a preservative, you want to make sure propyl galate that's G-A-L-L-A-T-E, is not in there. Okay, it's something that is a preservative, placed in gum a lot, and also used in some of the vegetable oil mixes as well. Okay, next up, sodium benzoate. Please write this down if there's anything that you do, because this is in everything. Everything, anything with a benzene. When you see benzene anything, okay, it's likely nine times out of ten gonna be a carcinogen, okay? Which is what a cancer-causing chemical. So, sodium benzoate. You're gonna see this in anything that companies want to have on the shelf for a little bit longer, all right? It's even in hair products, okay. Whatever companies want to place it in just to kind of extend the shelf life a little bit. I've seen it in salad dressings, we've seen it in barbecue sauce, we've seen it everywhere. Um, there was a sauce that my husband was looking at the other day at the store, and oh, lo and behold, at the end, sodium benzoate, put it back. We are not doing that, okay? So there are many companies that are doing it right, and they are not adding this ingredient to their product, all right? You just you just have to look at the label, and usually it's at the end because you don't need much of this to preserve the product. However, the thing is, if you're consuming so many different products, because nine times out of ten, you do have barbecue sauce, you do have salad dressing, okay? You have many products with this ingredient, and you're probably consuming it every day several times throughout the day, so it's adding up in your system, and your body's getting tired of eliminating it, okay? It is using carbonated drinks, fruit juice, even salad dressing, fermented foods, hair, it's in hair products, guys. I have seen it, it is in hair products, and it doesn't have to be. I understand why it's used because it does extend the shelf life of the products, maybe even up to a year. So I get it. However, um, if you want to just eliminate um the toxins, right? Or at least decrease your exposure to a lot of the chemicals that are out there, you can choose a brand that chooses not to use sodium benzoate, and there's many. You have to look at the label, all right? You have to look at the label. So when sodium benzoate is combined with vitamin C, okay, which many brands are, like as sorbic acid or citric acid, it is linked to an increased risk of cancer, guys. All right, so this reaction between many of them forms benzene, okay, and this is associated with blood cancer. It is so we have to do our due diligence due dil diligence, excuse me, when it comes to reading the label. It may take us longer at the grocery store, we may not like to do it, but it has to be done, especially with what's happening in the food industry today. Many corners are being cut, many corners, all right. And your health deserves a second look. Your health deserves an extra 20 minutes, okay? Your health deserves an extra $2 or extra three dollars that you might have to spend on a product that may not have that. And you know, that product, they spent more money, okay, not to have that ingredient to formulate a better product for you. We have to support those brands, we have to keep those brands in business. We have to, you know, keep those at the forefront so that our kids have better and that we have better for ourselves and we have better health. So do that due diligence and get in there at the store and read those food labels, all right? BVO, next up, brominated vegetable oil. Okay, this can be found in sodas, fruity drinks. Again, they cause reproductive harm and thyroid even toxicity. And it's addictive, okay? You ever wonder why a lot of those uh fruity drinks and even energy drinks um are so addictive? This is why, okay. BBO. And last up, but definitely not least, okay. Thank you for hanging in there with me for all of these. Last up is sodium nitrate, and I know many of you have heard of this. Um, if you eat packaged meat, I did speak about um a chemical earlier, but sodium nitrate is one that you want to add to the list because this is used to preserve meat, all right. But nitrites, nitrites have been clinically, all right, this has been studied, it has been associated with an increased risk of cancer, okay? You can find a brand that is not preserving or curing their meat with sodium nitrate, and many times it is done, like again, because before the meat is packaged, right, the animal has been butchered or slaughtered many months before. Okay, so how can we preserve this animal to be on the shelf for several more months after we have to put chemicals in there like sodium nitrate um or even BHA, right? Just so that we can get it to um not only look good, but to taste good, right? We're curing that meat, okay? So you want to look for brands that don't have sodium nitrate or nitrites. I was taught this in um pharmacy school. I remember my professor literally stating this that anything with a nitrate, especially sodium nitrate or nitrites, they cause cancer. Now I remember when I when I used to eat meat and I would go to even the public's deli, I would always ask them for an option that doesn't have that. And they do have options out there that um this particular chemical is not a part of their ingredients. All right. I hope you guys learned something on this episode. There's so many chemicals out there in our food. It's like, what do we buy? What do we eat? What do we drink? Okay, we gotta read our voodoo labels. There are many brands that are doing it right, many um places even that are willing to accommodate you if you are looking for something that doesn't have these ingredients. All right, we gotta use our voice, okay? We have to voice our opinion, especially if you're eating out, okay? But when you go to the grocery store, these are the top 12 food chemicals that you want to avoid. I am Dr. Monique Dills. I really enjoyed tonight's episode. And if you did, let me know in the comments. I will see you guys on the other side of health. Y'all be blessed. I pray this episode blessed you and inspires you to continue on your healing journey. May God bless you with health, happiness, strength, and may you receive the healing you desire in Jesus' name.
